Federal Agent Shoots Person In Minneapolis After Shovel Attack

Minneapolis: City officials confirmed that a person was shot in the leg by a US federal agent on Wednesday evening in north Minneapolis, near North Lyndale Avenue, as federal officers carried out an operation in the area. 

What happened in the latest Minneapolis shooting?

The incident unfolded around early evening on Wednesday. Local authorities said they were aware of reports that a "shooting involving federal law enforcement" took place, but details remain limited.

Why did the agent open fire?

According to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) statement, federal officers were attempting to arrest a Venezuelan man wanted on immigration-related issues when he resisted and attacked an officer with a shovel. As the struggle escalated, additional people allegedly joined in, using a shovel and a broom handle against the officer. Fearing for his safety, the ICE agent fired, hitting the main subject in the leg. 

Officials say the suspect tried to evade officers by fleeing in a vehicle, crashed into a parked car, and then continued on foot. The confrontation turned violent during the arrest attempt.

At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela who was released into the country by Joe Biden in 2022.

Were others involved or injured?

After the shooting, the wounded man and the officer were taken to hospital. Two others who took part in the attack were arrested, authorities said. No names have been released. 

How did people react at the scene?

Videos shared by local media showed a large crowd near the scene. Protesters and law enforcement clashed as tear gas was deployed. A heavy presence of federal agents and Minneapolis police in riot gear marked the tense situation. 

Is this connected to other recent incidents?

The shooting came just a week after another ICE-related fatal shooting in Minneapolis. That incident, involving the death of  a 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole Good, drew widespread protests and criticism of federal enforcement tactics.

City officials acknowledged the shooting on social media and said they are working to confirm further details. The DHS defended the agent’s actions, saying officers faced a violent attack and acted to protect themselves.
